Khao Yai National Park & Khmer temples of the Isan

Discover the Khao Yai National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site with its dense jungles, waterfalls, diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes. Covering an area of more than 2.000 square kilometers the Park is Thailand’s first largest nature reserve with up to 1.000 meter high mountains. With the average yearly temperature only a mild 23 degrees Celsius, the National Park is a popular destination and weekend escape for locals and Bangkok residents. Among numerous smaller Animals, birds and insects, the Park is home to wild buffalos, deer, elephants and tigers which can be seen mostly in the late afternoon along the edges of the forests or crossing the narrow road leading through the park. Explore the Khmer temples of Phimai and visit the Kingdom’s largest Banyan tree and its impressive crown.

Day 1 Bangkok – Khao Yai (L)
In the early morning pick up at the hotel in Bangkok and drive to Khao Yai National Park. Drive up a scenic road into the main park. Stop over at a viewpoint overlooking the surrounding valleys and local communities. Continue to the National Park’s visitor center. Short trek along a scenic small river surrounded by the dense tropical vegetation. A local ranger will point out many of the small and larger animals inhabiting the area. Chance to see some Great Hornbill birds, geckos, spiders and Gibbons. On the way you will pass the Orchid Cliff Waterfall bounded by a large number of wild orchids. Lunch at a small local restaurant in the park. Visit Haew Suwat Waterfall. Drive and short walk to the 1.200 meter high Pha Deaw Dai view point. Enjoy the panoramic view from the top of the steep cliffs overlooking nearby valleys and mountain ranges covered with dense evergreen forest. In the afternoon visit a wildlife watchtower (Optional). Drive to the resort and check in. In the late afternoon visit a nearby bat cave to see millions of bats leaving their cave every evening before sunset and flying towards the National Park. Return to the resort and overnight stay.

Day 2 Khao Yai (B/L)

After breakfast in the resort drive to the nearby National Park. Trek through the unspoiled jungle guided by a local ranger. Arrive at Pong Ta Long Waterfall with its 30 m high steep cliffs and enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the jungles of Khao Yai. After lunch walk upstream along a small river to a second waterfall hidden in the jungle. Time to swim and enjoy the tranquil and serene environment. Afterwards, trek to the point of departure and drive back to the resort. In the late afternoon visit a watchtower on the edge of the National Park. Chance to see wild buffalos who emerge from the park in the evening to graze in the glades. Return to the hotel and overnight stay.

Day 3 Khao Yai – Phimai (B/L)

After breakfast drive to the local capital Nakhon Rachasima known as the gate to the high plateau of the Isan Thailand’s northeastern region and main rice producing area. After arrival visit the old city center with and the city moat. See the traditional day to day life of the local people and visit the highly revered Thao Suranari Monument. Afterwards, drive north to the small town of Phimai. Visit the world’s largest Banyan tree. The tree is over 300 years old and its aerial roots and crown cover an area of 1.200 square meters. Lunch at a local restaurant in the shadow of the mighty tree. Drive to Phimai historical park and visit the ancient Khmer Temple. Phimai was once connected to the Khmer kingdom of Angkor and exhibits some of Thailand’s most important and well preserved Khmer temple structures. In the afternoon return to Khao Yai. Overnight stay at the resort.

Day 4 Khao Yai - Bangkok (B)

After breakfast at the resort discover the surrounding area and small villages. Visit a small nearby cave temple and its small herbal sauna which is operated by the monks for the villagers. Visit a local market or a natural pool. Optional: Time at your leisure at the resort until departure.

After lunch return to Bangkok airport or hotel.
