From the Golden Triangle to Luang Prabang

Discover the northernmost province and the Golden Triangle which borders Laos, Cambodia and Thailand along the Mekong River. You will then travel on the Mekong towards Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site. During this stunning boat trip along the Mekong River you experience the traditional and friendly lifestyle of the Lao people. Besides there are fascinating and photogenic landscapes with evergreen dense jungles, impressive rock formations and snow-white sandbars.

Location Information:
Day 1: Chiang Rai – Golden Triangle – Chiang Khong

Upon arrival at the airport in Chiang Rai, pick up and drive to the Golden Triangle and the mighty Mekong River. Boat ride along the curving river towards Chiang Sean. Stop at the Laotian river island of Don Sao. After lunch at a local restaurant on the river banks visit an interesting opium museum which gives you a detailed overview of the history of the region. Then transfer to Chiang Khong and check in at the hotel, located directly on the banks of the Mekong River. The rest of the day is at your own leisure to explore the small town with the many shops, restaurants and marketplaces.

Day 2: Chiang Khong – Pakbeng

In the early morning hours pick up at your hotel and short transfer to the river pier. After crossing by ferry you enter Laos and will be escorted to the comfortable river cruise boat. The first stop is at a traditional hill tribe village of the Mon people. Afterwards enjoy lunch while cruising through spectacular landscapes with snow white sand banks, secluded small hamlets and the jungle covered mountains. The boat features a sundeck which is equipped with comfortable chairs. Relax and watch the tranquil scenery passes by. In the late afternoon arrival at the small village of Pakbeng which lays half way between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. Transfer to the hotel with dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Pakbeng – Pak Ou – Luang Prabang

In the early morning breakfast at the resort, then transfer back to the boat. Continuation of the river cruise along the Mekong towards Luang Prabang. On the way stop at a Laotian village. During the dry season and at low tide you can watch locals panning for gold. Enjoy lunch on board surrounded by rock formations and dense tropical jungle. The second stop of the day is by the Pak Ou caves. The caves are famous for their collections of miniature Buddha sculptures and hundreds of small wooden Buddhist figures. From the the cave entrance you will have a beautiful view of the Mekong River and across the river fall of the Ou River which forms a freshwater lagoon in the Mekong. Continue towards Luang Prabang. Late afternoon arrival at the pier and transfer to your hotel.
